. . . about Chaos,
Reason, and Hope

Our 2005 lectures were held at
MAPS/BOP
The Psychedelic Centre in the Snowflake Village
on the Esplanade

Part of the audience at one of the MAPS/Palenque Norte lectures at Burning Man 2005     In 2005, Palenque Norte joined forces with the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) to produce a lecture program as our gift to the Burning Man community. Originally, we planned on presenting these talks in the form of podcasts (MP3 files) that anyone could download after the burn. Unfortunately, like many a good playa-plan, things didn't work out as well as we expected. The good news is that Bruce Damer had his MP3 recorder running on Friday and was able to capture much of that day's conversation.

You can now download
MP3 recordings of the following talks:

"How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Dimensional Shift"
(right click to save)
by Daniel Pinchbeck

"Visionary Art/Visionary Design"
(right click to save)
by Erik Davis.

If/when other recordings turn up, we will also post them here at PalenqueNorte.org (a MatrixMasters.com feature) in podcast format.

[All photos on this page were taken by Bruce Damer and Galen Brandt. You can see all of their Burning Man pictures and more MAPS/Palenque Norte pictures (including two brief video clips) on Bruce's Web site.]

Grof Holotropic Breathwork Workshop
led by
Sheelo Bohm
Grof Holotropic Breathwork Practitioner

. . . beginning at 2 p.m.
"Psychedelics, Psychotherapy and Mystical Experience"
. . .
Brian Richards, Psy.D. is a clinical psychologist and will be presenting an overview of the spiritual potentialities inherent in therapeutic work with psychedelics, drawing largely from Pahnke and Richards' work. This will involve a brief discussion characterizing one conceptual approach to various aspects of mystical experience (e.g., ineffability, paradoxicality, aspects of the process of ego dissolution, etc.), as well as structural set/setting and ritual considerations which help occasion these types of experience. After his talk, Brian will invite some discussion of the potential implications of unitive experience for the individual going forward in his or her life (e.g., in terms of self and interpersonal relatedness, etc.).

. . . beginning at approximately 3 p.m.
"Psychedelic Therapy: A Critical Review of Experimental Evidence"
. . . Matthew W. Johnson, Ph.D. will present a brief overview of scientific studies regarding the clinical application of psychedelics. What did we learn before human psychedelic research was halted three decades ago? What questions remain to be answered with the reemergence of human psychedelic research?

. . . beginning at approximately 5 p.m.
"Ibogaine Research: Is this the drug to stop drug addiction?"
. . .
Sandra Karpetas and Leah Martin of the Iboga Therapy House in Vancouver will talk about their experiences treating 31 people with ibogaine for drug addiction, and their plans for and progress in opening a psychedelic clinic in British Columbia. Valerie Mojeiko of MAPS will share preliminary data on the success rate for the program, and explain the strategy for incorporating a research component to this pioneering project.

Daniel Pinchbeck speaking at the MAPS/Palenque Norte lectures at Burning Man 2005. . . beginning at 1 p.m.
"How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Dimensional Shift"
. . . Daniel Pinchbeck
will explore the thesis of a "dimensional shift," currently underway and culminating in 2012, the end-date of the Mayan Calendar. He will discuss crop circles, extraterrestrials, infraterrestrials, the likely collapse of the current socioeconomic order in the next few years, and the need for a new measure of time. He will also discuss Metacine, a new magazine and media company, currently in formation, designed to assist in the process of global healing and revisioning, offering new paradigms and tools for creating a harmonic planetary culture. Open discussion forum to follow.

Erik Davis speaking at the MAPS/Palenque Norte lectures at Burning Man 2005. . . beginning at approximately 2 p.m.
"Visionary Art/Visionary Design"

. . . In this talk,. Erik Davis will give an overview of the role that visionary art, as lineage and practice, plays in today's planetary culture. Then he will contrast this with what he is calling "Visionary Design": the translation of the visionary impulse into the design of artifacts, systems, and real-world solutions.

Bruce Damer at the MAPS/Palenque Norte lectures at Burning Man 2005. . . beginning at approximately 3 p.m.
"The Infinite Improbability of Us"
. . . Bruce Damer returns to Palenque Norte and continues his "consciousness of the cosmic" series with this drive through four billion years of improbability that lead to the complex life forms of Earth and you and me. You should come out of this talk feeling just a wee bit unique and sensing that life like ours, however ephemeral, is a pretty precious commodity.

. . . beginning at approximately 4 p.m.
Panel discussion and Q & A with all of this year's speakers
(who are available :-)

Saturday, September 3, 2005

Part of the audience at one of the MAPS/Palenque Norte lectures at Burning Man 2005. . . beginning at approximately 2p.m.
" LSD and Psilocybin in the Treatment of Cluster Headaches" (MAPS story link)
Therapeutic use of psychedelics is usually thought of in the context of psychotherapy--in fact, the word "psychedelic" means "mind-manifesting". However, psychedelics have applications in a number of purely neurological diseases, also. I will discuss recent evidence that indole-ring psychedelics are remarkably effective in treating cluster headaches, one of the most painful and disabling conditions known. Presented by: British-born Andrew Sewell, MD, who is dual-trained in both psychiatry and neurology and currently holds the position of Assistant Psychiatrist and Research Fellow in the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Research Center at McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School. He is an active member of the Boston Burners, and this is his sixth burn.

. . . beginning at approximately 4p.m.
"Psychedelics and Marijuana Research: Therapy, Politics and Future Visions"
. . . Rick Doblin, Ph.D
Inspired by Burning Man's focus this year on the Psyche, Rick's talk will focus on psychedelics (including marijuana), with a particular emphasis on strategies and tactics for creating socially sanctioned contexts for the exploration of consciousness through psychedelics. From addressing people's fear of death and trauma in FDA-approved studies using MDMA and psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy, to addressing fear of drug abuse through studies evaluating ibogaine in the treatment of substance abuse, to responding to our culture's fear of change by suing the DEA for blocking medical marijuana research (argued before a DEA Administrative Law Judge on August 22-26), a path will be charted from the present moment to the imagined glorious future, when both psychedelics and Burning Man will have been mainstreamed.
