Israel defies UN vote demanding end to Arafat siege (Jonathan Steele, The Guardian, September 25, 2002) Israel yesterday defied US criticism and a United Nations resolution calling for it "immediately" to end its siege of Yasser Arafat's compound in Ramallah . . . In an unusual move, dictated by Washington's desire to avoid vetoes of its planned security council resolution on Iraq, the US did not block, but merely abstained on the vote. . . . Israeli officials expressed "disappointment" with the American position, and made it clear that they would not comply with the resolution.
[Hagerty comment: Where is Bush's cry for a new U.N. resolution dealing with Israel's defiance of earlier resolutions? How is Israel's defiance different from Iraq's?]
