Bush's War OF Terror
I have a long-standing policy of classifying anyone who talks about a War on "Terror" as an absolute moron.
As you know, every English dictionary in print describes "terror" as: Intense, overpowering fear
To declare a War on Fear makes no sense to me. Wars cause fear and terror. How in the world can a war eliminate terror? . . . Bush has begun a war OF terror, and we're all his victims. Too bad he didn't initiate a global police action to round up bin Laden et al . . . instead he's promoted every two-bit thug on the planet to the status of being a nation, the normal target of a war. . . . IMHO, Bush is the leading terrorist in the world . . . he's certainly responsible for more civilian deaths than any terrorist I've heard about (over 30,000 in Iraq now!).
In Bush's war of terror, I'm pulling for the other side, which is called PEACE.

The Mysterious Death of the Nuclear Attack Sub USS Scorpion
Last August, I posted a link to some pictures I took during Phase II Scorpion Ops. At the time those photos were taken the "official story" about what caused the Scorpion's loss hinted at a hostile encounter with a Russian submarine. Those who had a high enough security clearance were told that either A) the Russians sank her; or B) the Scorpion shot at the Russians and their torpedo misfired, turned around, and acquired them as the target. For many years I assumed that the reason I never heard an official statement about Scorpion's loss was that this was true and continued to be classified. Like many of the things we are now learning about the reasons we went to war in Iraq, most of what we were told was a fabrication . . . primarily to cover up serious malfeaseance.
At long last, the truth about the Scorpion has become public, thanks to the excellent investigative reporting of Stephen Johnson. His new book, Silent Steel : The Mysterious Death of the Nuclear Attack Sub USS Scorpion, in my opinion, will ultimately be the final word on the fate of the USS Scorpion. Earlier this year, I spoke at length with Stephen about the investigative work he did behind the scenes to research this book. I can honestly say that he is the first person I've met (who wasn't on the "Scorpion Cruise" with us) who knew EVERY little tidbit, story, and even the gossip that took place on that cruise . . . and he even told me about a few things that went on right under my nose that I missed at the time. If anyone has a chance of putting the pieces of this intricate story together, I believe it is Stephen Johnson. But don't just take my word for it. Here is what some others are saying about this important book:
"The magnitude of the tragedy of the USS Scorpion is matched only by the depth of the mystery surrounding her loss. Stephen Johnson has done a remarkable job of shining new light on this dark moment in U.S. submarine history."- Sherry Sontag, co-author, Blind Man's Bluff: The Untold Story of American Submarine Espionage
"Stephen Johnson has crafted a forensic masterpiece that leads the reader back through time to unravel the gnawing enigma of the tragic 1968 loss of the nuclear attack submarine USS Scorpion. Sifting through a maze of conflicting theories, he meticulously lays out a tale of undersea detectives searching for conclusive evidence to one of the most baffling mysteries of the cruel sea." -- Rear Admiral Thomas Evans, author, analyst specializing in submarine history and operations, and former officer on the Scorpion
"What happened to the USS Scorpion" The question has vexed submariners for almost four decades. Now, with meticulous research and incredible attention to detail, Stephen Paul Johnson examines and dissects one of the most tragic and mysterious submarine accidents in U.S. Navy history." -Douglas Waller, author of Big Red: Inside the Secret World of a Trident Nuclear Submarine
"Silent Steel captures the intense mystery and trauma of the Scorpion sinking and explains the background leading to her loss in the words of many of her former crew and their families. The thoroughly researched story is a must read for all serious history buffs." -- Peter Huchthausen, author of October Fury, America's Splendid Little Wars, Shadow Voyage, and co-author of Hostile Waters
