A Sad Day ... Hunter S. Thomson has departed
(Troy Hooper and Claire Martin, The Denver Post, February 21, 2005)
Hunter Stockton Thompson, who coined the term "gonzo journalism" to describe the unique and furiously personal approach to reportage exemplified in his 1972 book "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," died Sunday night of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his Woody Creek home. He was 67, family members said. . . . Pitkin County Sheriff Bob Braudis, a friend of Thompson's, confirmed the death. Thompson's son, Juan, discovered his body Sunday evening. . . . "Dr. Hunter S. Thompson took his life with a gunshot to the head. ... The family will provide more information about (a) memorial service ... shortly. Hunter prized his privacy and we ask that his friends and admirers respect that privacy as well as that of his family," Juan and Anita Thompson, Hunter Thompson's wife, said in a statement.
I am deeply saddened by the death of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, Jr., whose work was a great inspiration to me. In this age of corporate control of the media, we can use all of the gonzo journalists we can find. But who can blame Hunter for checking out? For sure, he has done more than his share of shaking the Establishment's tree. And his humor remains among the best of the last century. "The Great White Shark Hunt" can still make me laugh out loud. You will be sorely missed, Hunter, but you won't be forgotten. ... Lorenzo

Now here's an interesting topic for discussion A computer that never hallucinates cannot possibly aspire to artificial thought. David Gelernter
The way my computer has been acting lately, I'm sure it is hallucinating ... maybe it is beginning to think on its own :-).

The New Robber Barons
You've got to hand it to the Bush Gang. They make all of the Old West gangs look like amateurs. Their latest scam, the Social Security rip-off, is a classic. When you check out the details of their proposed plan, you will be amazed that anyone, as in ANYONE with half a brain would go along with it. Here's how it works. You set up a private investment account, put your own money into it, and when you're ready to retire you turn the entire account over to the government who will then give you a little of it back each month at the same rates they're paying now. Of course, you may lose all or some of the money you put in this account. That will reduce the amount of your monthly check after retirement, of course. (You lose, and those lucky rich white guys that are getting all the tax breaks win.) Oh, I almost forgot. If you do really well in managing your account, the IRS is going to tax you for doing better than the average. ... Is this a great country ... or what?

What a long strange trip this is becoming
Why have we become so indifferent to having such corrupt and insane Attorney Generals? Since the Republicans came into power in the 1980s, we've had some of our nation's top law enforcement officials go to prison, and we've just recently survived that madman Ashcroft. Just when you think it can't get any stranger, along comes this Hispanic success story of a lawyer turned our nation's Torturer-in-Chief, the man who thinks torture is an American value. Where did this jerk get his law degree, The School of the Americas?
