Business is more important than comfort in NYC
This morning the TV news reporters in New York were reporting that power company officials were asking people to turn off all unnecessary appliances, particularly their air conditioners, while power was being restored to the region. In the background, on one side of Times Square the huge electric signs began to spring back to life. Apparently it is OK to use electricity to continue advertising, which in the USA is apparently more important than comfort.

    FOX News: Unfair and Unbalanced
The chief propagandists for Bush and Sharon, FOX News, now claims that it owns the rights to the phrase "fair and balanced." Apparently FOX is upset because the title of pundit Al Franken's new book is Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them; A Fair and Balanced Look At The Right. So they are suing Franken and his publisher to force them to change the name of his book, which is due for publication next month.

FOX doesn't want anyone to use the phrase "fair and balanced" without their permission. I therefore accede to their wishes. From now on I promise to refer to FOX News as unfair and unbalanced. If you are one of the few decent people left at FOX, now is the time to think about leaving that cesspool ... before your karma gets so dark it will take a thousand more lifetimes to clear it.

    Thought for the day
The only remaining [US] superiority is military. This is classic for a crumbling system. The final glory is militarism. The fall of the Soviet Union took place in an identical context. Their economy was in decline, and their leadership grew fearful. Their military apparatus gained in size and stature and the Russians embarked on adventures to forget their economic shortcomings. The parallels in the US are obvious. The process has significantly accelerated in the past few months.

    Definition of the day
Iraq Reconstruction: A process whereby big firms that contribute to the president's re-election campaign obtain contracts to rebuild the damage caused by U.S. bombing.

    Something to think about
Yesterday's news brought the story that the Catholic Church, in its infinite wisdom, has determined that same sex marriages are "deviant." ... Can you believe the gall of these people? If there has ever been a "deviant" institution it is the Catholic Church.
