    Thought for the day
President Bush has sent U.S. forces to war in violation of American traditions of defensive war that have lasted since George Washington. This war is wrong; it violates the Constitution and international law.
    Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH)

    Thought for the day
NO NATION CAN PRESERVE FREEDOM AMIDST CONTINUAL WARFARE
Of all the enemies to public liberty, war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes. And armies, and debts, and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few.
In war, too, the discretionary power of the Executive is extended. Its influence in dealing out offices, honors, and emoluments is multiplied; and all the means of seducing the minds are added to those of subduing the force of the people.
The same malignant aspect in republicanism may be traced in the inequality of fortunes, and the opportunities of fraud, growing out of a state of war and in the degeneracy of manners and morals, engendered by both. No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.

    --James Madison, April 20, 1795

Nations have recently been led to borrow billions for war; no nation has ever borrowed largely for education. Probably, no nation is rich enough to pay for both war and civilization. We must make our choice; we cannot have both.

The next revolution - World War 3 - is being waged inside your head. It is, as Marshal McLuhan predicted, a guerrilla information war fought not in the sky or on the streets, not in the forests or around international fishing boundaries on the high seas, but in newspapers and magazines, on the radio, on TV and in cyberspace. It will be a dirty, no-holds-barred propaganda war of competing worldviews and alternative visions of the future.

Thanks for this to Marshal McLuhan, Fraser Clark, Danie, and The Parallel University

People ask me, "Are you saying there's a conspiracy?" --because that's the word where everybody starts laughing. It means you believe in flying saucers. "No," I said, "I'm going to change the word." We won't say it's a conspiracy that all the great offices of state are occupied by gas and oil people --the President, the Vice-President, National Security Adviser --it's just a coincidence. "It's a coincidence," and everybody smiles --that's a nice word --"Oh, yes, of course, it's a coincidence" that they are running the government and getting us into a war in oil-rich places."

    What Coalition?

Seventy percent of British, and 90% of Italians and Spaniards oppose Bush's crusade.

That doesn't sound like a "coalition of willing" for Little Bush's war. It's more like a coalition of the coerced.

Outrageous dereliction of duty over Korea, obsessive warmongering against Iraq, crude, aggressive behaviour worthy of Leonid Brezhnev's Soviet Union, threats against the UN, a $400-billion deficit that will infect the world with inflation, and damage to America's reputation - such are Bush's "accomplishments" to date. Thought for the day
If the United States were to engage in another war with Iraq, one aimed at overthrowing Saddam Hussein, the entire Arab world would turn against us and the U.S. would alienate its allies in the international community. To occupy Iraq would instantly shatter our coalition, turning the whole Arab world against us, and make a broken tyrant into a latter-day Arab hero."
--George Bush the First in an interview with the BBC marking the five-year anniversary of the Gulf War.

Moreover, Vice President Dick Cheney said at an energy conference six years ago that hundreds of thousands of United States soldiers and Iraqi civilians would die if a war in Iraq were ever fought on the streets of Baghdad.

    Mark Twains thoughts about war
The loud little handful--as usual--will shout for war. Then the handful will shout louder. A few fair men on the other side will argue and reason against the war with speech and pen, and at first will have a hearing and be applauded; but it will not last long; those others will outshout them, and presently the anti-war audience will thin out and lose popularity. . . . Before long you will see this curious thing: the speakers stoned from the platform, and free speech strangled by hordes of furious men who in their secret hearts are still at one with those stoned speakers but do not dare to say so. And now, the whole nation will take up the war cry, and shout itself hoarse, and mob any honest man who ventures to open his mouth; and presently such mouths will cease to open. . . . Next the statesman will invent cheap lies, putting the blame on the nation that is attacked, and every man will be glad of these conscience-soothing falsities, and will diligently study them, and refuse to examine any refutations of them; and thus he will by and by convince himself that the war is just, and will thank God for the better sleep he enjoys after this process of grotesque self-deception.
    --Mark Twain

[Comment: Isnt it about time we proved Mr. Twain wrong. This time let us continue to use speech, pen, and the Internet to argue against the insanity of war. This time they will not silence us, the vast majority of humankind who want to live in peace.]

Everything exists for joy. There is not one other reason for life than joy. Weve got nothing to prove to anyone, because nobody other than All-That-Is is watching. In other words, were not trying to get brownie points from some other galaxy. Were not trying to get someplace else; were not trying to get it done, because there is no endingwe cannot get it done. Everything exists for the purpose of joy in the moment.

    Thought for the day
There is one light of the sun, though it is interrupted by walls, mountains and infinite other things. There is one common substance, though it is distributed among countless bodies which have their several qualities. There is one soul, though it is distributed among several natures and individual limitations. There is one intelligent soul, though it seems to be divided.

Constantly regard the universe as one living being, having one substance and one soul; and observe how all things have reference to one perception, the perception of this one living being; and how all things act with one movement; and how all things are the cooperating causes of all things which exist; observe too the continuous spinning of the thread and the contexture of the web.

All things are implicated with one another, and the bond is holy; and there is hardly anything unconnected with any other things. For things have been co- ordinated, and they combine to make up the same universe. For there is one universe made up of all things, and one god who pervades all things, and one substance, and one law, and one reason.

    --Marcus Aurelius
