Ohio Voters Just Say No to Drug Possession Referendum
By Jim Burns
CNSNews.com Senior Staff Writer - November 06, 2002

(CNSNews.com) - Ohio voters by a 2 to 1 margin defeated a proposed state constitutional amendment that would required judges to prescribe treatment instead of jail time for drug possession offenses. The defeat means nonviolent first and second time drug offenders in the Buckeye State can still face jail time. The proposal would have required judges to order treatment instead of jail time for qualifying offenders who requested it. The issue was opposed by law enforcement, some state Ohio judicial leaders and medical and drug treatment organizations. Election returns indicated 69 percent of Buckeye State voters were against the amendment. Ohio Republican Gov. Taft and first lady Hope Taft led the campaign to defeat the constitutional amendment. Democratic challenger Tim Hagan said he would vote for it, then turned down an offer from the issue's backers for help with his campaign.Taft defeated Hagan in Tuesday's election.
